From July 1st to 3rd, 2025, the town of Donegal (Ireland) hosted the 3rd international Green Hydra partner meeting under the title: "The expanding green hydrogen sector – barriers and key factors to unleash the potential for SMEs - role of policies”.
Key themes included community acceptance of new technologies, innovation in SMEs, and strengthening local capacity for the energy transition. A highlight of the event was the study visit to Killybegs Port, which served as a powerful example of how a traditional fishing port can transform into a hub for new and sustainable technologies.
In collaboration with local communities, research institutions and the energy industry, Killybegs Port is actively developing infrastructure for the production of renewable energy sources and green hydrogen, opening opportunities for new industries and jobs while maintaining its historic maritime identity.
During the visit, participants were introduced to concrete projects and partnerships involving ATU Killybegs, the OSCAR Centre, and leading hydrogen stakeholders.
A strategic Market System Mapping workshop, facilitated by Hanze University, enabled partners to explore key barriers and enablers for scaling up green hydrogen use in mobility, industry, and the built environment.
The Green Hydra project once again underscores the importance of international cooperation and local action in building a sustainable energy future.
