From mid-December 2024 to early June 2025, activities related to the drilling of the Velika Gorica GT-1 (VGGT-1) geothermal exploration well are expected to take place in the Velika Gorica area

Marked start of work

The start of work on drilling and testing the Velika Gorica geothermal well (VGGT-1) has been marked by placing an information sign. The final depth of the vertical well is expected to be around 2,900 metres, with the possibility of further deepening by 200 metres. It is assumed that two geothermal water reservoirs exist at depths of approximately 2,020 and 2,770 metres. The expected temperature of the geothermal water is around 90°C.

Exploration activities in the Velika Gorica preliminary exploration area are being carried out as part of the project "Development of Geothermal Potential for District Heating Purposes," which is funded by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).

The aim of this technically and capital-intensive project is to increase the share of renewable energy sources—specifically geothermal energy — in the district heating sector. It will demonstrate and validate the feasibility of implementing geothermal solutions in cities with existing centralised heating systems.
