"Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency and the Kazakhstan´s oil and gas company KazMunayGas have confirmed a strategic partnership to launch cooperation on the Shyghys geological exploration project,” said Marijan Krpan, President of the Management Board of the Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency, at the energy conference ‘Croatia at the Decisions of the Decade’.
In his presentation entitled ‘Croatian Energy Sector to 2040: Demand, Resources, and the Reality of the Fossil Transition’, he addressed current challenges and realistic frameworks of the energy transition, with a particular focus on the course of cooperation between the Croatian Hydrocarbons Agency (CHA) and KazMunayGas (KMG) on exploration at the Shygys field in Kazakhstan.
The agreement on a strategic partnership between AZU and KMG followed cooperation between experts from both countries over the past seven months, and the signing of a letter of intent expressing interest in cooperation in May 2025. The project will be implemented operationally by the Croatian company Geoenergija razvoj in cooperation with KMG.
The global geopolitical situation in the energy sector underscores the importance of this significant step forward in strengthening Croatia’s energy balance. Kazakhstan is one of the most important energy markets in this part of the world and enables Croatia to achieve long-term diversification of energy sources, thereby strengthening its energy security and independence.
