AZU at the World Expo 2025

The Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency participated at the World Expo Osaka 2025 as part of the celebration of Croatia’s National Day.

The World Expo brings together people and innovations from all over the world with the goal of finding solutions to the challenges humanity faces on a global scale. EXPO 2025 Osaka will take place from April 13 to October 13, 2025, on the artificial island of Yumeshima, built especially for this occasion, under the theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.”

The Republic of Croatia is represented at this year’s Expo 2025 Osaka with a national pavilion entitled “Croatia – Climadiversity,” which showcases a unique technological and artistic interpretation of Croatia’s climate diversity. The pavilion combines architecture, technology, and ecology, offering visitors a one-of-a-kind experience that emphasizes the importance of climate diversity and sustainability. By re-creating real temperatures sampled from 46 meteorological stations, the Croatian pavilion provides a sensory experience of the country’s climate regions. Continuously changing throughout the day and across seasons, the pavilion is never the same — inviting visitors to reflect on the profound impact of climate diversity on individuals and communities.

As part of the thematic week The Future of Earth & Biodiversity, a panel discussion titled Green Cities — Urban Challenges and Climate Change was held, with the participation of the President of the Management Board, Marijan Krpan. In his presentation, he highlighted the unique geothermal potential of the Republic of Croatia. He provided a chronological overview of the Agency’s activities related to geothermal development — from mapping and analysing existing data to carrying out geothermal drilling. He also described the project “Preparation and Research of Geothermal Potential in the Context of District Heating,” which explores opportunities for the commercialization of renewable energy for heating purposes in four Croatian cities. At the end of his presentation, Marijan Krpan concluded that geothermal projects should continue to be developed through cross-sectoral cooperation and strategic initiatives supporting the green transition.

EXPO 2025 in Osaka is expected to attract more than 28 million visitors and the participation of over 160 countries, making it one of the world’s largest business and cultural events.
